Persistency in Writing

How good are you at being persistent with your writing? Have you written a query letter, sent it out a few times and then given up? Have you started a book proposal but can’t seem to finish it? Do you have a stack of unfinished projects on your desk or in your computer? Do you give up to quickly?

Today I read a great story of one writer’s persistency.

Dick Wimmer’s persistence was inspiring. The New York Times wrote that Dick called himself the most rejected published novelist in history. His book, Irish Wine, was rejected 162 times over 25 years. Finally, in 1989, Mercury House published Dick’s book. It got positive reviews and led to two sequels. Many times people die with their song still inside them. Not Dick. He died on May 18 at the age of 74 knowing that he had achieved his dream.

What’s your dream for your writing? Write it down. Post it where you can see it. Then take steps to achieve the dream:

  • Join a writer’s group
  • Get a few books on writing
  • Find a mentor
  • Attend a conference
  • Subscribe to The Writer or Writer’s Digest. As Nike says, Just do it!

Then, never give up – just like Dick Wimmer.
